Nitrofurans (nitrofurazone, nitrofurantoin, furazolidone and furatadone) are synthetic antibacterial agents used as veterinary drugs for the treatment of bacterial infections. However, because of their carcinogenicity and genotoxicity, its use in animals used as food is prohibited in many countries including Japan and overseas.
