Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic of bacterial origin. Antibiotics that are effective against a wide range of microorganisms are used as veterinary drugs. Typical use includes prevention of bacteria that invade the larvae of honey bees and to maintain freshness during fishing. However, because of the adverse effects on the human body, there is no approval of veterinary drugs for human consumption, with the Food Sanitation Law stipulating that it is must be "undetectable" in foods.
In this application note, the sample was treated according to the standard test method. It was first homogenized in a solvent of methanol with 1% metaphosphate solution. This mixture was then suction filtered, and the solvent removed and extracted using a reversed-phase polymer solid phase.
